Keynote Speakers


Tom Murphy is a senior resident fellow and the Kingbeil Family Chair for urban development at the Urban Land Institute. Murphy is the former mayor of Pittsburgh and specializes in public policy, retail/urban entertainment, transportation/infrastructure, housing, real estate finance and environmental issues. He has extensive experience in urban revitalization–what drives investment and what ensures long-lasting commitment.



Dr. Paula Thaqi has been the Director of the Broward County Health Department (BCHD) since April 2008.  Under Dr. Thaqi’s leadership, the BCHD was recognized by NACCHO as a Public Health Ready Health Department.  She reorganized the BCHD to maximize accountability, efficiency, and effectiveness.  Dr. Thaqi believes in working with the local public health system to deliver the ten essential public health services and has increased and strengthened partnerships to leverage resources and eliminates gaps and duplications.
